The faculty of Mechanical engineering which was established in 1975 offers both undergraduate and post-graduate programs. The bachelor’s course of study focuses on learning and applying knowledge domain and technology to actual applications. The graduates are going to be ready to design, build, control, test and manufacture mechanical systems and equipment for instance, machines, air con and heating systems, power plants, and hydraulic and pneumatic control systems.

The bachelor’s course of study is obtainable as a daily program and a special program. The special program which is conducted in evenings and weekends takes in both high school graduates and graduates from vocational colleges.

Miss Chanya Uraijaree, assistant researcher under Advisory of Associate Professor Kiatfa Tangchaichit, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering was in charge of design and analyze a refrigeration air chamber of a shrimp freezer. She states that it is also the same as designing or analyzing an AC system or a chiller system. In fact, all of these conditions are pretty much the same thing. They're just a slightly different scale of size. But also remember that these are for an ideal vapor compression cycle. Therefore, the performance of this would be slightly different to the real-world scenario.

Research Challenge

The focal point of Miss Chanya’s study is to improve the airflow profile by utilizing CFD Software to simulate and analyze the distribution wind profile in the air chamber of a shrimp freezer. The factor includes that the core temperature of shrimp product must be -18 degree Celsius or below.

The model of the given task consists of low-temperature air diffuser as an inlet with uniform air velocity. To maintain the quality of food products, the freezing rate is very crucial. A forming of large ice crystals can occur during a slow freezing rate, which could cause damage to the product quality in cellular structure. In addition, a lack of uniformity of wind profile distribution, flowrate, wind velocity is considered as one of important factors that affects the temperature of the frozen food products. Therefore, Miss Chanya believes that to perfect the design of an air chamber CFD Software is strongly necessary.

Since the wind profile distribution in the air chamber can be analyze within CFD Software. Miss Chanya decided to utilize SC/Tetra, an Unstructured Cradle CFD Software. By utilizing the Symmetry Plane feature, she can split up the model into 4 quarter and simply simulate and analyze one particular section. As a result, she has found that the amount of calculation time has been reduced to more than 200% of her previous simulation process.

Miss Chanya also shared her experience with her project that the analysis of the outlet part is very difficult. 25 outlets of the air chamber are only 5-mm width. Since the room is in a large-scale, the simulation also has to be taken in such detail to consider the analysis around outlet parts. She states that thanks to SC/Tetra, she can generate mesh and specify sizes of different mesh layers manually in a short period of time along with friendly GUIs. The total number of hexahedral mesh in a chamber model is 11.2 million elements with a minimum mesh size of 0.3125 mm.

Benefits

Since 2016, Khon Kaen University (KKU) has been utilizing SC/Tetra among different fields of academic projects; Combustion, Freezer Design, Weather assistive data collection, or Hard-disk research. The user feedback has also been extremely positive. And until now, KKU has collaborated with Cradle Consulting Thailand in generating number of simulation engineers across all engineering fields in Thailand.
